Rewire Scanning Issues in Pro Tools

Updated Oct 12, 2023

****** Rewire is no longer supported in Pro Tools. Please update to version 2023.9 or later******

When installing the Mixup system, the following plugin formats are installed on your system: AAX, VST3, AU.

Additionally, a ReWire device is created in a Propellerhead folder here:

Win: C:\Program Files\MixupAudio\Mixup\Mixup ReWire Device.dll

Mac: /Library/Application Support/Propellerhead Software/ReWire/Mixup ReWire Device.bundle

This Mixup ReWire Device will need to be insterted on an instrument track in Pro Tools in order to start the ReWire protocol and allow for transport control directly from the Mixup plugin.

🥒🥒🥒 Here is the pickle 🥒🥒🥒

Sometimes Pro Tools does not know there is a new ReWire device installed on your system and does not add it to the list of available ReWire devices. The only way we found to force Pro Tools to recognize and acknowledge the Mixup ReWire device is to clear Pro Tools' cached plugin list in order to force a complete plugin + ReWire device re-scan next time you start Pro Tools.

Solution:

To address the rewire scanning issue, remove the following file:

[UserFolder]\AppData\Roaming\Avid\Pro Tools\InstalledAAXPlugIns on Win or
[UserFolder]/Library/Preferences/Avid/Pro Tools/InstalledAAXPlugIns on Mac

Upon doing this, Pro Tools will initiate a comprehensive scan which might be time-consuming or even fail. To bypass this, you can remove all AAX plugins from the directories below and reintroduce them in stages:

Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins
Mac: /Library/Application Support/Avid/Audio/Plug-Ins

Examples: add 10 plugins, start Pro Tools, stop Pro Tools, add 10 more plugins, start Pro Tools, stop Pro Tools.

This will make sure Pro Tools doesn't overheat whilst scanning your immense plugin library. (Yes we know your library is immense otherwise you wouldn't be having this problem :-) )

We genuinely apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding.
